'I'm a dermatologist – two overrated skincare products I wish people would stop using'

A dermatologist has shared two overrated skincare products she wishes people would put down.

Dr Aamna Adel, a London-based dermatologist, has controversially given a thumbs down to some popular products to soothe dry lips. When asked what overrated skincare item she wishes people would stop using, she said something that “immediately comes to mind” is Burt’s Bees and Carmex lip balms.

Sharing advice on her Instagram account @dermatologist_adel, she told her 608,000 followers that she “absolutely cannot get behind” these two products. She said: “I’m not just a hater for no reason.

“The problem for me and Carmex and even Burt’s Bees is that these two things in combination are actually making your dry lips worse, so if you’re someone who is reapplying your lip balm like literally hundreds of times during the day and you still feel like your lips are dry and irritated, I can guarantee (it is) because you’re using one of these two. These both have quite irritating ingredients.”

She explained that Burt’s Bees has beeswax in it which is a contact allergen and Carmex has “so many irritants in it” as well as menthol. She added: “When you keep applying that to your lips they become more irritated, so you feel like you need to apply more and they become more irritated, and then you end up with drier lips”.

Dr Adel predicted everyone would “come for her” in the comments section – and some people certainly weren't happy. One Instagram user commented: “Couldn’t disagree more about Burt’s Bees! It is one of the only things I can tolerate on my lips and definitely doesn’t dry them out more.” And another added: “Carmex CURED my CHRONIC dry lips.”

The dermatologist recommended Cerave Advanced Repair Ointment and Vaseline as an alternative
