I'm a Champions League legend who was convinced to join Man United - but Glazers messed up the deal

Toni Kroos' future at Real Madrid is yet to be decided, but the World Cup-winning midfielder has previously revealed just how close he came to joining Manchester United.

Kroos joined Madrid in the summer of 2014 and is nearing a decade-long stint with the Spanish giants. In that time the Germany international has won 21 major trophies including three LaLiga titles and four Champions League winners' medals.

The midfielder was inspirational during Madrid's 2-2 semi-final draw at Bayern Munich, with a stunning pass which split the defence for Vinicius Jr's opening goal at the Allianz Arena. However, after 10 years at the Santiago Bernabeu, Kroos' time with Madrid may be coming to an end.

The midfielder's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and there are no signs of an extension being offered or agreed. Kroos said after Tuesday's game in Munich: "I want to win as much as possible this season - I don't think about the future."

It could all have been very different for Kroos, however. United appointed David Moyes as manager in 2013 to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, and he was intent on bringing the midfielder to Manchester.

However, Moyes was sacked by the Old Trafford hierarchy in April 2014, and as a result, the deal to bring Kroos to United fell through - and Kroos left Bayern Munich for Madrid that summer. Less than two years ago, Kroos opened up on United's interest in his signature and how he met with Moyes over moving to Old Trafford.

“I knew beforehand that United wanted me,” Kroos said in May 2022 via the Daily Mail.
