'I'll be honest' - Roy Keane offers brutal Ruben Amorim verdict ahead of Man United debut

Roy Keane has tempered expectations on new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim and admitted he isn't sure whether he will be a success at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old was appointed as Erik ten Hag's permanent successor earlier this month and will take charge of his first game against Ipswich on Sunday afternoon.

It's a chance for a much-needed reset at United, who have endured a disappointing start to the season, picking up just 15 points from their opening 11 Premier League matches. Ahead of the trip to Portman Road, United sit 12th, seven points off the top four but are aiming for back-to-back victories after beating Leicester last time out.

Amorim can help propel United closer to those Champions League places but Keane doesn't want to get too excited about the former Sporting CP boss and is unsure of how he might get on.

Speaking while on punditry duty for Sky Sports ahead of the Ipswich game, Keane said: "You're always hopeful when a manager comes into United he can come in and get United back up competing at the top. It's not quite happened the last few years. I think the PR over the first week from the new manager has been good, he’s spoke well, been very positive, a lot of talk about changing systems.

"He’s a young manager, very hungry, looks like he can hopefully deal with the pressure. But being honest, nobody knows until he gets into the job properly and that’s getting games under his belt. You hope today they can come and beat Ipswich, put a marker down, get the team competing. It’s probably just more hope than anything else until he gets into the job and he sees what the real problems are."

Amorim took charge of his first training session last Monday and has had just a week to prepare for the trip
