I got Rangers flashback to 2003 when Ross County scored because I still believed 'we’ve got this' – Barry Ferguson

Before we start, I realise this is going to sound a bit daft. But stick with me and let me try to explain.

Because when big Simon Murray hit the back of the net to equalise for Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday night, something inside me was transported back in time by almost 21 years. May 25, 2003 was the exact date. The day that we smashed six goals past Dunfermline to win the title on goal difference on the final day of the league season to set up a domestic treble.

I still get goosebumps thinking about it even now and I don’t need any excuse to bring it up in conversation. But the reason I mention it now is because I got a flashback to how I felt at the time the other night when Murray scored and, for a split second, Ibrox fell silent. There was no panic. No sense in the stands that something terrible was about to happen. No feeling of anxiety among the fans. And it reminded me of exactly how I felt out there on that pitch on the day we pipped Celtic at the post by outsourcing them at the death on the last day.

There was a real connection between the players and the supporters at that time. They knew they could trust us to deliver and we knew they had our backs, even at the most difficult moments. That’s a hard thing to achieve at Rangers and, trust me, I’ve been there when the opposite has been the case. There were various stages in my career when I knew things weren’t going well and the fans were quick to point it out.
