'No good culture' of Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho can be changed by Manchester United allies

One of the criteria that Dan Ashworth sets for defining a "great leader" is someone who can set a culture that gets the best out of people and players within a football club. That is what Erik ten Hag has spent the last 20 months or so trying to do at Manchester United.

Ten Hag said this season that he had inherited a "no good culture" when he took over the club and a large part of his remit over the last season and a bit has been changing that, with mixed results. It's certainly fair to say that the Dutchman has had to spend too long on issues of discipline during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

From Alejandro Garnacho's reprimand for lateness on Ten Hag's first pre-season tour, to Marcus Rashford being dropped to the bench for a Premier League game for missing the start of a team meeting. Those are two of the easier issues Ten Hag has had to deal with. Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo overstepped the line so far that they essentially put an end to their careers at the club, while Rashford's partying in Belfast recently was far more significant than his errors of last season.

Ten Hag has taken a firm approach to all of these issues, particularly on Ronaldo or Sancho. The former was quickly dispatched with after his unauthorised interview with Piers Morgan and Sancho has been exiled since questioning his manager on social media at the start of September.
