"I don't understand why" - Journalist reacts amid unexpected Everton development today

Everton have been criticised by journalist Dean Jones after urging the PGMOL to apologise for the officials’ failure to award a penalty in their latest setback against Manchester City.

PGMOL managing director Mike Riley has contacted Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and manager Frank Lampard to say sorry after the VAR opted against awarding the Merseysiders a spot-kick in Saturday’s narrow defeat.

According to The Athletic, Everton chief executive officer Denise Barrett-Baxendale made a formal complaint on the club’s behalf to Richard Masters at the Premier League and chief football officer Tony Scholes yesterday.

The report suggests Barrett-Baxendale expressed grave concerns at the quality of officiating in Everton matches recently and demanded an apology be given to Lampard and his players about the weekend’s VAR decision.

It comes after Manchester City midfielder Rodri was judged by referee Paul Tierney and video assistant referee Chris Kavanagh not to have handled the ball in the closing stages at Goodison Park.

As a result, Phil Foden’s 82nd minute goal condemned the Toffees to a 1-0 defeat, placing them at even more risk of relegation.

Lampard reacted to the decision not to award a spot-kick by accusing Kavanagh of ‘incompetence at best’ and claimed his three-year-old daughter ‘could tell you that was a penalty’.

However, talkSPORT pundit Darren Bent slammed the PGMOL for apologising and was surprised by Riley taking the decision to contact Kenwright and Lampard.
