'I don't go out because I don't want to lose my spot': Stockport's parking nightmare

"It's an absolute nightmare", says Sam, a resident in a Stockport neighbourhood which has been plagued with parking problems over the last 18 months.

"I don't go out because I don't want to lose my spot," she adds, pointing to rows of transit vans and cars parked on pavements along Posnett Street and Northgate Road in Edgeley next to Springmount Mill, where hundreds of luxury apartments are being built.

The area's narrow roads leave little room for parking, but the influx of builders and contractors working on the 202 new apartments has created a situation where residents are worried about losing their space, with some saying they feel “trapped” in their own homes.

Neighbours have been complaining about it for months, but there is a growing feeling that no one is listening.

Sam - who didn’t want to share her surname - is a facility manager who lives opposite the building site, and said the work has been "horrific.”

The lack of parking spaces has left her having to leave her car further and further away from home, making it difficult to carry shopping back.

With work still to do before the new apartments are finished, Sam says neighbours can't cope with the situation any longer, and wonders why these issues were not considered when the planning application for the work was approved.

"I called the council to make a complaint and they just said they can't do anything about it," she claimed.

"This is an issue the council has caused and they need to fix it. The roads are narrow and it's all terraced housing here, why wasn't any of this thought about before now?
