'I ditched my narrowboat life to live on the road – my van has everything I need'
Ever wondered about the allure of life on a narrowboat or in a van? TikTok user Heidi has experienced both, recently transitioning from one to the other and shared what life is like 'off-grid'.
Along with her partner Kai, she spent two and a half years living in a van before swapping road for river, only to return to the tarmac once more. She shared her passion with her 5,000 TikTok followers, telling them: "I suppose you could say I'm hooked on the off-grid alternative lifestyle."
She continued: "Living on a narrowboat was an incredible experience. I felt deeply connected to the changing seasons, and there was something truly special about having your floating home travel with you wherever you went."

Highlighting the perks of their past life on a boat, Heidi added: "My favourite part of boat life, especially at this time of year, was the log burner. It made the space feel so warm and cosy – perfect for autumn and winter evenings."
She also shared scenes from their canal boat's bedroom – which, although snug, offered idyllic waterside views. So why revert back to a van?
Heidi said that on the road, she, Kai, and their dog Millie have all their necessities, "I absolutely love van life and the freedom it offers for fast-paced travel and exploring new places," she said.
But Heidi still holds a deep affection for life on the water. She continued: "But narrowboat life holds a special place in my heart, and I can confidently say it's not over for me yet. One day, I'd love to own and renovate another boat, combining the best of both worlds."
