'I'd love to have him' - Man United loanee Mason Greenwood given hope of international return

Jamaica manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has said he would "love" to have Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood play for his team.

Greenwood, who is currently on loan at Getafe, has played for England once before in a match against Iceland in September 2020. However, he is unlikely to be called up by England boss Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024 this June.

The 22-year-old moved to Getafe after charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023. But Greenwood could still play international football for Jamaica because his father, Andrew, is Jamaican.

There have been reports that the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) would like Greenwood to play for them instead of England. Under FIFA rules, Greenwood could change which country he plays for. At a CONCACAF Nations League event in Dallas on Tuesday, Hallgrimsson confirmed he has thought about having Greenwood on his team.

"I really don't like to talk about 'what if', but this, of course, has come to our mind," the Icelandic coach told the Athletic, reports The Mirror.

"I would love to have him in my team. Like all coaches, I would like to have the best players in our team, but it's always up to the player himself if he wants to do it."

Since joining Getafe in September, Greenwood has scored seven goals and registered five assists. His form has even sparked speculation of a summer switch to Barcelona, but United's new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has said the club will make a decision on Greenwood's future at the end of the
