'I compared Asda, Lidl and Sainsbury’s own brand 'Magnums' against the real thing and one really hit the spot

It’s fair to say we’ve had a pretty miserable and wet summer this year, with July being one of the wettest on record according to the Met Office. And now in typical British fashion, as we wave off the summer of 2023 we’ve been hit by a glorious heatwave, with temperatures rising as high as 29 degrees across Greater Manchester.

So what better way to relax in the sun than enjoy a freezing cold ice cream? But, as with everything during the cost of living crisis, the prices of our favourite refreshing treats have risen noticeably.

These days a box of three Magnums will set you back on average around £3.20, whereas supermarket own brands can be picked up for a fraction of the price.

Because of this, I decided to head down to supermarkets Lidl, Asda and Sainsbury's to compare their own brand of Magnum ice cream with the real thing.

Here’s how each supermarket ice cream compared to the classic Magnum.




There’s not much to say here that you all won’t already know, the classic Magnum is delicious. With its rich and smooth chocolate paired up elegantly with creamy and refreshing ice cream, you just can’t go wrong.

The ice cream in a magnum is Made out of 100% ice cream, which is probably why it tastes so good and not as watery some of its copy cats.

Despite its flaws, Asda’s own brand Magnum ice cream was quite possibly my own personal favourite out of the knock offs. The ice cream was smooth, creamy and packed with a bunch of flavour.

Although the chocolate tasted nowhere near as rich as a classic Magnum, I have to admit that cheap chocolate is my guilty pleasure which means I award Asda’s imitation with a higher mark than what some people may give it.
