'I cannot think of a worse case of this type... I hope you are thoroughly ashamed'

A paedophile who sexually abused schoolboys in a cupboard refused to apologise as he left court.

Richard Gaines, 79, appeared at Isleworth Crown Court on Tuesday, May 14, after a seventh victim came forward and reported him to police after reading newspaper articles describing his offences. The former geography teacher at St Martin's Preparatory School, in Northwood, North West London, was convicted and jailed for five years and two months in 2019 for a number of offences against six boys dating back to the 1970s.

The predator offered sex education to the boys, showed them pornographic magazines, then proceeded to take them into a storage cupboard to carry out sex acts. On Tuesday, the court heard other allegations of 'recent internet offences', however, there was no update on the police investigation.

Our sister site, MyLondon, asked Gaines if he wanted to explain the 'circumstances' at the time he carried out the abuse. However, he refused to explain or apologise to his victims.

Prosecutor Edmund Fowler told the court the latest victim to step forward recognised the 'almost identical' abuse after reading about the case. The victim recalled being asked to look at pornography in a cupboard, along with younger and smaller boys, before Gaines carried out his abuse for roughly 40 minutes on two occasions between 1973 and 1977, the court head.

Mr Fowler said the victim was so traumatised by the incident that they struggled to make friends and believed they could only work in solitary jobs. At a pre-trial hearing, Gaines admitted to two counts of gross indecency
