I am a former Chelsea star and came close to playing for Rangers AND Celtic - but here's why it didn't happen

A former Chelsea and Leeds United star has confessed to coming close to playing for both Rangers AND Celtic.

The ex-Blues and Elland Road striker - who also had stints in his career at the likes of Atletico Madrid, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough - made the confession while admitting plying his trade in Scotland would have been something he would have LOVED to do. His playing career was a successful one with recognition on the international stage over 20 times with the Netherlands.

After playing, he took to the dugout at Royal Antwerp before his last four jobs came in England. He started off his managerial career down south after his time in Belgium at Burton Albion before heading for Queen's Park Rangers. It was then a stint at Northampton Town before his last gig came at Burton Albion. He is better known for his playing career than managerial but can you guess who it is? It is no other than Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

The ex-Dutch international has revealed his fellow countryman Dick Advocaat was in charge when Rangers wanted to bring him to Scotland but a move just didn't quite materialise. He then claimed Celtic made a move to snap him up - but similar to his Ibrox fate, the move never came around for him - although he wishes it had!

Speaking to BoyleSports about the latest SPFL odds, Hasselbaink said: "I would’ve loved to have played in Scotland during my career and I came close to playing for both Rangers and Celtic. First it was Rangers who came in for me when Dick Advocaat was at the club but it didn’t quite happen.

"Then Celtic came in but it never materialised. They are two massive clubs who I would’ve loved to have played for, they have such an amazing history, but it didn’t quite happen."
