Hurley strike sees Galway turn tables on Waterford

Galway United completed a second half comeback to defeat Waterford FC 2-1 in Eamonn Deacy Park.

On a baltic Friday night in Terryland, it was the home fans who went home the snugger of the two sets of supporters thanks to a superb display by Galway United.

Both sides came into the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division encounter on the back of impressive wins away from home last week - Galway United defeated Dundalk 2-0 while Waterford dismantled Drogheda United 4-1.

On this occasion, the 20th meeting between the clubs in the top flight and the first since 2007, it was Waterford who started the brighter on Corribside.

Recent attacking recruit Pádraig Amond gave the Blues a first half lead after he struck his second goal of the league campaign in the 18th minute after some fine play from Connor Parsons.

Following a darting run down the right by the former Wycombe Wanderers player, Parsons delivered a delightful ball to an unmarked Amond at the back post to tap home from close range in front of a joyous away end.

United immediately searched for a response and almost brought themselves level 10 minutes later through a sensational long-range effort by Aodh Dervin.

The first-time strike looked destined for the top corner once it left Dervin's right boot but the crossbar prevented an equaliser to the relief of Sam Sargeant in the Waterford goal.

The same man, Dervin, was thwarted once again shortly before the break after his low strike was cleared off the line with the Blues backline defending admirably to keep their clean sheet intact.

That clean sheet wasn’t to be preserved though, as the Tribesmen’s pressure finally paid off just after the interval.
