Hungarian GP: Nicholas Latifi reflects on up and down Saturday that saw him top FP3

Nicholas Latifi certainly had a Saturday of highs and lows at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with the Canadian topping FP3 and then coming P20 in qualifying.

The Williams driver hooked up a really nice lap towards the end of the final practice session at the Hungaroring, with him guiding his car through the slippery conditions to go faster than anyone else, with team-mate Alex Albon in third to show that the car clearly likes operating in the damp.

Come qualifying, though, things had dried up and, unfortunately for Williams, normal service was resumed with them back down towards the wrong end of the grid.

Indeed, Latifi will start today’s race at the rear of the field with him lining up in P20, completing a day of ups and downs in pretty extreme style.

Speaking to the press after the session, he said:

“Yeah I was pleasantly surprised.

“I was feeling quite good and it wasn’t by fluke, everyone was doing lap times at the same time so we obviously got something right there and I’m obviously clearly not a bad driver, it was a nice moral victory and a boost.

“But yeah coming into qualifying in the dry we’re just lacking a lot of downforce, we have a lot of speed in the straight but we’re lacking downforce.”

There’s been rain in the air this morning at the Hungaroring but it seems as though we could be in for a dry afternoon of racing, meaning Latifi might have his work cut out in terms of making lots of progress.

Lights out is at 2pm UK time.
