Hungarian GP: Alice Powell breaks Jamie Chadwick's unbeaten W Series run

Alice Powell delivered a perfect drive at the Hungarian Grand Prix to bank her first W Series win of 2022.

Her victory at the Hungaroring breaks reigning champion Jamie Chadwick’s perfect run this season and marks a first Championship victory for Click2Drive Bristol Street Motors.

It was a tense race throughout but the experienced Powell kept her composure and was able to fend off the building pressure behind her.

The British driver started in pole position, with 2019 runner-up Beitske Visser joining her on the front row.

Chadwick worked her way up from P5 after producing some mouthwatering overtakes to get ahead of Spanish duo Marta García and Nerea Martí. The champion was then able to manoeuvre around Visser and claim second place.

Despite her best efforts, Chadwick didn’t have enough speed to catch Powell, who looked totally in control by the final lap.

It was an emphatic finish for the Brit, whose last win came back in September 2021 at Zandvoort.

Chadwick remains comfortably ahead of the pack with 143 points but will have to wait a little longer before she can wrap up a potential third W Series title.

Powell’s result sees her jump from sixth in the drivers’ standings to second. Her Hungarian GP win puts her level with Visser on 68 points, while her protege Abbi Pulling occupies fourth with 65 points.

After finishing second at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, Powell’s improved result means she has now won at five different Formula 1 circuits with W Series.

Can she take the win in Budapest and run with it?

The drivers will now enjoy a lengthy break before the Championship resumes at the Singapore Grand Prix in September for its Asian debut.
