Hull KR set for significant boost at Castleford Tigers as Rovers get what they need

Frankie Halton and Luis Johnson's return to action couldn't have come at a better time for Hull KR and Tony Smith, as the pair look ready to return to the first team fold after their respective setbacks. With Rovers low on troops after recent lengthy injuries sustained to Kane Linnett, Elliot Minchella and Jordan Abdull, the pair will be needed now more than ever

After a fantastic 2021 season, Johnson was sadly injured during a pre-season match earlier in the year, after hobbling off against Huddersfield Giants after falling while supporting teammates Jordan Abdull's break. He was initially thought to be unavailable for around six weeks after a period of rest. However, an X-ray showed he had fractured his fifth metatarsal and required surgery that would keep him on the sidelines for up to three months.

Ironically, it was Halton who stepped up to replace Johnson, and the former Featherstone back-rower took the role by storm. Halton's efficiency in defence and solid line-running quickly saw him become one of the first names on Tony Smith's teamsheet as he cemented his place in the back-row.

Halton rolled his ankle during the Robins' Good Friday derby win over Hull FC. The Irish international underwent a scan the following day, which revealed that the in-form player had suffered a sprain in his ankle, which has ruled him out of the last four games, including last weekend's semi-final defeat against Huddersfield.

When speaking to the media a fortnight ago, Hull KR head coach Tony Smith said Halton was maybe available for selection against Huddersfield, but while that game came too soon this Sunday's trip across the M62 to face Lee Radford's Castleford Tigers may not be.
