Huge emergency response after bins set on fire by 'groups of youths'

A huge emergency services presence responded last night after bins were set on fire by 'groups of youths' in Stockport.

Video footage taken at around 10pm showed a large amount of emergency vehicles on Brinnington Road. Multiple police and fire vehicles were stationed at the scene on the stretch of the road which runs over the M60.

Police said officers were first called to the area at around 9pm to 'reports that a number of bins had been set on fire'. The force added that groups of youths had to be 'dispersed'.

No arrests were made. Emergency services were on the scene until around midnight.

Patrols will now be stepped up in Brinnington over this weekend and next week following a spate of anti-social behaviour in the area. Police said 'tougher measures' will be used to crack down on those responsible.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Extra officers will be on patrol in Brinnington, Stockport, after a series of anti-social behaviour incidents. Emergency services attended the area from about 9pm to midnight on 17 February 2023 after reports that a number of bins had been set on fire.

"Officers also needed to disperse groups of youths. No arrests have been made."

Chief Inspector Ian Wrench, of GMP's Stockport district, said: "Setting fires is not only dangerous but also ties up emergency services resources that could be needed elsewhere in Greater Manchester. We will have extra officers in the area over the weekend and next week, and will consider using tougher measures to ensure there is no repeat of the dangerous and irresponsible acts.

"We would urge anyone with any information about last night's disorder
