Huge delays on M56 after BMW bursts into flames with emergency services at scene - live updates

There a huge delays on the M56 this afternoon after a BMW burst into flames. Emergency services are at the scene of the fire, of which the vehicle has been moved onto the hard shoulder.

Motorway traffic cameras show congestion building with National Highways reporting delays of at least 30 minutes. Traffic is also backed up onto the M6 this afternoon with two lanes currently blocked.

Live traffic service Inrix has reported that all traffic is being temporarily held as emergency services, including fire crews, continue to battle the fire.

The incident is causing significant delays on the westbound carriageway, from J10 A49 Tarporley Road (Stretton) to J11 A56 Chester Road (Preston Brook).

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police also confirmed there are "no reports of any injuries at this moment in time".

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At around 3.10pm today (Wednesday 9 August), police were called to reports of a vehicle fire on the M56 westbound between junctions 10 and 11.

"Officers attended and found that a silver BMW 116D had caught on fire. Lane 1 and lane 2 are closed as a precaution while Cheshire Fire and Rescue work on the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."

A spokesperson for the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Three fire engines were called to a vehicle fire on the M56 between junctions 10 and 12 this afternoon. Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.
