Huddersfield Town's Leigh Bromby hails play-off final place he predicted last summer

Huddersfield Town head of football operations Leigh Bromby admitted that watching his club’s play-off semi-final victory over Luton Town was more anxiety-inducing than exciting, but hailed the efforts of Carlos Corberan and his players in coming out on top to book passage to Wembley.

The Terriers were put under pressure by Nathan Jones’ side for large spells of the two legs, but Luton’s less-than-clinical finishing and some excellent Huddersfield defending meant that ultimately Jordan Rhodes’ 81st-minute goal in the second leg was enough to settle the tie.

Bromby twice enjoyed promotion as a player, under former Town managers as it happens: he helped Neil Warnock’s Sheffield United side reach the Premier League in 2006 and was part of Simon Grayson’s Leeds United when they returned to the Championship from League One in 2010.

But he found watching Corberan’s side from the stands to be a completely different experience to being on the pitch, telling BBC Radio Leeds: “As a player it was exciting; in this role now that was nerve-wracking! I don’t think it’s a nice position to be now, you’ve got no control over what’s going on, so I definitely prefer the feelings as a player and the excitement…it doesn’t feel like that up there, definitely, and I know how you guys feel now for all those years watching!

“But listen, we set out a project at the beginning of the season, we’ve achieved a step. I did say to David Threlfall-Sykes in the summer, he asked me where we would end, and I said we would definitely get to a play-off final. You can ask him, he can quote me on that. So we’ve achieved that. In a one-off game I believe we’ve got enough in there in the dressing room to compete.”
