Huddersfield Town's defensive handful and coolness under pressure among key Luton Town questions

A hugely pivotal eight days for Huddersfield Town gets under way on Monday evening as Luton Town come to the John Smith’s Stadium for a game that could have huge implications on how the play-off picture shakes out.

Just one point separates the two sides in a hugely congested top six, and at this stage of the season every point is to be treasured. But will either side be able to take a big stride towards a top six finish with a victory at the John Smith’s Stadium – and if so, where is the game likely to be won and lost? Here are the key issues to look out for.

Huddersfield Town’s recruitment over the past few windows has rightly attracted plenty of praise, but while acknowledging there may have been circumstances beyond our knowledge, deciding to let Elijah Adebayo get away in January last year looks like a rare error.

The striker has been superb since taking the big step up from League Two Walsall, scoring 20 goals in his 54 Championship appearances, including three in his last six. His 15 strikes this season have been instrumental in turning Luton from a defensively capable side who don’t score many goals into a genuine contender for promotion this season, scoring the most of any team outside the top two.

Harry Cornick and Cameron Jerome have taken it in turns as Adebayo’s partner and both have proved successful in the role despite – or perhaps because of – their very different styles. Whichever way Nathan Jones goes at the John Smith’s Stadium, the defence will need to be at their very best.

Huddersfield have scored 16 non-penalty set piece goals this season, putting them just one behind league leaders Fulham. Next on the list are Luton Town, who have found the net 15 times from dead balls.
