Huddersfield Town icon David Wagner sacked by Swiss champions Young Boys

David Wagner has been sacked as manager of Swiss champions Young Boys.

The former Huddersfield Town manager will forever be remembered in West Yorkshire as the man who masterminded their promotion to the Premier League in 2016/17 and then pulled off a miracle of equal standing to keep them in the division the following year.

But Wagner has not been able to replicate that success elsewhere since leaving the John Smith's Stadium by mutual consent in 2019.

A promising start to life at troubled German side Schalke later that year gave way to a poor run of form that stretched either side of summer 2020 and saw him sacked at the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

Wagner took the reins at Young Boys last summer after boss Gerardo Seoane left for Bayer Leverkusen having led the Bern-based side to three successive league titles - including winning last season's campaign by a whopping 31 points.

Young Boys currently sit second in the table, 15 points behind FC Zurich, level on points with Basel.

The highlight of Wagner's time at the club was a 2-1 win over Manchester United in their opening game of the Champions League group stage in September, but they were unable to follow that up with any more victories and finished bottom of their group.

Wagner said of his departure in a statement on the Young Boys website: "Of course it's not what I wanted. But I understand that the sporting management wants to give the team new impetus.

"I would like to thank everyone who has supported and accompanied me this season, especially the fans who always create a special atmosphere in the Wankdorf stadium.

"I got to know a great club with great people in YB and found exactly what I was hoping for when I arrived.
