Huddersfield star Chris McQueen winning race to be fit for Challenge Cup final

Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson is confident Chris McQueen will win his race to be fit in time for the Challenge Cup final. The influential Australian second-rower came off with an abductor injury in Saturday’s 25-4 semi-final victory over Hull KR and is out of tomorrow’s Super League game against Wigan.

The Giants play Wigan again in the final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in just over a fortnight’s time so there are understandable concerns around whether the ex-Queensland State of Origin star will make the club’s biggest outing in 13 years.

But Watson said: “We’re working towards the Challenge Cup final for Chris. Everyone who has seen him thinks he should be able to make it and he’ll be good for it so fingers crossed.

“It will just depend on what his pain threshold is like and how he reacts to the treatment. They said we could have pushed him for the Toulouse game (next Friday) but for someone like Chris who’s played in NRL Grand Finals and State of Origin the extra week will probably do him more good.”

On the injury, Watson explained: “He felt it just before half-time which meant we could have a look at it and, with his experience, he knew he had to have it checked.

“If he’d carried on and played the second half he’d have no chance to play in a couple of weeks’ time. But fingers crossed we’ve caught it at the right time and he did the right thing by coming off.

“It’s a huge one for us (getting him fit). He’s a big, big player but it’s not only what he brings on the field. It’s how he’s developed over the last 12 months into a real genuine leader amongst the group and someone all the players respect massively.”
