How smart workers can get 10 days off work using just three days of annual leave this Christmas

The build-up to the busiest time of the year has begun, with less than two months to go until Christmas.

Move over Halloween decorations - it's almost time for cosy pyjamas, festive films and hot chocolate in front of the fire place. Workers can maximise their time off over the Christmas period with a simple hack.

Using just three days of annual leave, you can enjoy a total of 10 days out of office before the year ends. That way, you can have a well-deserved break following the chaos of Christmas.

The secret to more than doubling your time off work is by making the most of the bank holidays. The final bank holidays of 2023 are Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Then, of course, there's New Year's Day - which takes place a week later, although technically next year.

This year Christmas Day, December 25, falls on a Monday and Boxing Day, December 26, falls on a Tuesday. New Year's Day, January 1, falls on the following Monday.

Workers can get ten days off simply by booking off the dates in between Christmas and New Year. The dates you'd need to use your annual leave for are Wednesday December 27, Thursday, December 28 and Friday December 29.

It means you're only using three days of annual leave to get ten off, including the weekends. You'd then have the dreaded return to work on Tuesday, January 2.

As the New Year creeps closer, it's worth bearing in mind the bank holidays that take place during Easter and the summer. You could use the same trick outlined above to further maximise your time off.
