How much Rangers squad costs compared to Champions League opponents Servette
Geneva is ranked one of the most expensive cites in Europe but when it comes to football club in the swanky Servette district of the Swiss city then they are certainly prudent.
In fact, they are relative paupers compared to Champions League third qualifying round rivals Rangers when it comes to splashing the cash on transfer fees. Rene Weiler - sacked as Anderlecht boss just weeks before they were due to face Celtic six years ago - was appointed the summer and inherited a squad mainly full of free transfers and academy graduates.
Summer signing Bradley Mazikou was recruited from Aris Salonika but the Congolese international left back cost a modest fee of just £350,000 with Danish starlet Alexander Lyng, who costing the same from FC Helsingor. Classy midfielder Timothe Cognat was recruited from Lyon four years ago but was only playing for the French Ligue 1 side's second side and they let him go for a nominal fee. So as they prepare to face the Light Blues in a huge Euro tie, they will no doubt be envious of the type of money Michael Beale has splashed this season - with Jose Cifuentes still to be announced. Here, Record Sport looks at both squads and the fees involved after the Swiss side came through a penalty shoot-out thriller against Genk.
