How Manchester United should line up vs Rayo Vallecano in pre-season friendly

Manchester United welcome Rayo Vallecano to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

United played Atletico Madrid in Oslo yesterday in their penultimate friendly of the summer and lost their unbeaten pre-season record, with Joao Felix condemning the Reds to defeat with a goal in the 86th minute.

Erik ten Hag started a strong side at the Ullevaal Stadium and he confirmed after the game that the players who started against Atletico won't be involved against Rayo Vallecano, which should give an opportunity for youngsters to get minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also set to start against Vallecano. Ronaldo returned to training on Tuesday and he responded to an Instagram post about his omission from the United squad in Norway on Friday night, writing: “Sunday the king plays.”

Some will wonder how Ten Hag handles Ronaldo when it is straightforward: play him. He is the greatest goalscorer in the game’s history and as long as he is available for selection he is an asset. His presence would be a timely fillip after the rancorous defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Lisandro Martinez needs a good amount of playing time ahead of Brighton, even if it looks like Victor Lindelof will start. Ethan Laird is preferable to Aaron Wan-Bissaka even though he is likely to go out on loan again.

James Garner needs a start and Zidane Iqbal has earned a home start. Christian Eriksen could do with more minutes, as could Hannibal Mejbri.
