How Manchester United plan to use unsellable player

Manchester United centre back Victor Lindelof will also be used as cover in the full back positions in the likely event that he stays at the club.

Lindelof, 30, has not trained in more than three weeks due to a toe problem and only played two halves during pre-season. United are set to be saddled with a player they have sought to sell for the majority of the summer.

The Sweden captain is one of four defenders currently sidelined through injury and United sources have namechecked Lindelof among the players who could provide cover at left back.

Lindelof started six times at left back last season and replaced Luke Shaw there at half-time away at Aston Villa and Luton Town. United lost three of the six games Lindelof lined up at left back.

United have no intention of moving for a stop-gap left back ahead of Friday's transfer deadline, having signed Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham on deadline day last year.

Shaw is expected to return from a calf injury after the September internationals and Tyrell Malacia has been slated for an October return from a long-term knee problem.

United have started the season with Diogo Dalot at left back and new signing Noussair Mazraoui is also an option to play there. Seventeen-year-old left back Harry Amass has been promoted to the first team squad after his fine form during the pre-season tour.
