I have worked with Jason Wilcox - I know one thing he'll definitely do at Manchester United

Southampton manager Russell Martin is convinced Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox will be supporting Erik ten Hag amid the club's underwhelming start to the season.

Wilcox joined United in April as part of Ineos' restructuring of the football department at Old Trafford. He was appointed from Southampton, where he was the club's director of football.

Wilcox went on United's pre-season tour of the United States and has been a directors' box regular so far this season, being seen alongside the likes of Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth and Sir Dave Brailsford.

It is understood Wilcox has worked closely with Ten Hag in recent months and was involved in the club's recruitment drive during the summer transfer window.

And Saints boss Martin, who led his side to promotion from the Championship last season, is convinced Wilcox will be helping the United manager in every way he can.

Asked about Ten Hag ahead of Saturday's game, Martin told reporters: "I don't know him. I've watched a lot of his team recently to understand them but I hope to be under the level of scrutiny he is in a job like that one day.

"Jason Wilcox will be supporting him, I'm sure, because he's a great person."

Martin was appointed Saints boss in June last year, tasked with leading the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt. He achieved his objective, leading them to promotion via the play-offs.

Wilcox played a key role in offering Martin the job at St Mary's and he has said the former is worthy of the opportunity Ineos presented him with earlier this year.
