How Manchester City’s cold war with Liverpool was finally ended by Trent Alexander-Arnold

It must be handed to Trent Alexander-Arnold, he has finally managed to add the final ingredient which the Manchester City vs Liverpool rivalry needed - spice.

Last year, Jamie Carragher attempted to wind up Gary Neville by claiming that this rivalry between Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp's men was greater than the battles between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. Of course, the quality of football is arguably better, as should be the case as time progresses, but beyond that, it has been lacking those fiery moments that make this sport the best in the world.

"I know Jamie Carragher riled a few during the week when he said that it (City vs Liverpool) is the greatest rivalry of all time. I didn't bite," Neville said on his Gary Neville Podcast back in March.

"Of course, it has got a case. In terms of consistency and quality and excellence, I think it has absolutely got a point. The point I make is that when you talk about rivalry I almost feel like there has got to be more to it than that. It is almost like the ferocity and intensity, is there a story to tell?"

As much as both sets of supporters would hate to admit it, the former Manchester United captain had a valid argument. There hadn't been a Roy Keane/Patrick Vieira tunnel bust-up moment to be looped for eternity pre-match by Sky Sports yet and it is clear it was never going to come between the managers who share a 'bromance' on the sidelines.
