How Leicester City should solve the Youri Tielemans transfer saga

One Leicester City player was always likely to dominate the headlines this summer, and that is Youri Tielemans.

With just one year remaining on his contract, with Arsenal interested in recruiting him, and with the Belgian midfielder's latest comments on his future, in which he said he was listening for opportunities, he remains the talk of the town. So how are City best to approach the situation?

Give the midfielder until the players return to pre-season in the last week of June to make a concrete decision over his future. If he decides he wants to stay, lock down the borough of Charnwood until he has put pen to paper. Otherwise, it is time for everyone to move on.

While Tielemans has shown he is a consummate professional, manager Brendan Rodgers and his squad will benefit from starting their preparations for the new season as they mean to go on.

Excluding him from the off may seem like a harsh approach to some, but it is one that would make sense. Tielemans has a good attitude and so would likely continue to train hard, either on his own or with the under-23s. Besides, he would only be doing himself a disservice if he didn’t.

In terms of a transfer fee, accepting the reported £25m would not be the end of the world for City. With a year left on his contract, Leicester would be pushing their luck to hope for too much more. Maybe £30m at a push. But Leicester have shown they can negotiate well - £80m for Maguire, £50m for Chilwell – so £35m is not completely out of reach.
