How is Baba Rahman getting on away from Chelsea at Reading?

Championship side Reading pulled off something of a shock signing when they were able to lure Chelsea left-back Baba Rahman to the Select Car Leasing Stadium on loan.

Operating under a transfer embargo, the Royals were and still are heavily restricted in what they could do in the transfer market, so to recruit someone of the 27-year-old’s calibre was seen as a real coup by many.

He was a much-needed addition in Berkshire too, with the second-tier side going into the 2021/22 campaign without a senior left-back and needing to rely on youngster Ethan Bristow following Omar Richards’ departure to Bayern Munich in the summer.

The fact Rahman failed to join before the start of the campaign already limited his appearances in Reading colours, but regardless, he was set to be one of the first names on the teamsheet from then because of the lack of options his current loan side had and currently have at left-back.

One thing that has been apparent throughout his loan spell is the fact he does have defensive vulnerabilities, with Millwall’s goal against the Royals at The Den in November exposing his weaknesses going back at times.

Unfortunately, he has been part of a defence that currently holds the joint-worst defensive record in the division, conceding 72 goals in 36 games and that has played a massive part in Paul Ince’s side currently being in a relegation battle.

In fairness to the Ghanaian, a lot of those goals conceded came when he was away at the African Cup of Nations earlier this year and the severe hamstring injury he sustained against Preston North End last month has kept him out since, though he is due to return in the early stages of next month.
