How Erling Haaland will approach chasing Dixie Dean record during Man City run-in

Erling Haaland is giving no thought to writing himself into English football history after becoming the all-time top scorer in a single Premier League season.

Haaland's 35th of the season in the Premier League for Manchester City saw him overtake Alan Shearer and Andy Cole as the top scorer in a single campaign, putting him on 51 in all competitions. He is unlikely to top 60 top-flight league goals in the season, which is the current record set by Dixie Dean in 1928, and there are 18 examples of players scoring more than Haaland in history - although none since 1967.

One record Haaland could own outright, however, is Dean's record of 63 goals across all competitions in a season from 1927-28.

With eight games remaining - nine if City reach the Champions League final - Haaland needs 12 goals to equal that Dean record, but he is not giving any thought to writing his name in English football history over helping City win the three remaining competitions they are fighting for.

“I don’t think of it or any records. I try to do my job for the team and focus on what I can do on the pitch to win football games," he said.

"I think of the next game and creating the next chance – that’s what I think of. I have to do my thing. For me the most important thing for me is to convert the chances. We have to execute it in the right way – that’s what I try to focus on.

“We have to rest and now think about the next game against Leeds – that’s how this job is. We have to take it game by game. The spirit in this club is unreal and the vibe too. I really enjoy it.”
