How Darwin Nunez’s stats in 2021-22 compared with Erling Haaland’s

Manchester City have signed Erling Haaland and Liverpool are about to confirm the arrival of Darwin Nunez – but how did the two strikers compare in 2021-22?

Haaland burst onto the scene at Red Bull Salzburg before scoring 86 goals in 89 games in two-and-a-half seasons at Borussia Dortmund.

Pep Guardiola’s side have now activated the £51.2million release clause in his contract to bring the Norway international to Manchester. 

Nunez spent time at Penarol and Almeria before moving to Benfica, where he scored 48 goals in all competitions over the course of two seasons.

Liverpool have agreed to pay an initial £64.1million for the 22-year-old but add-ons could make the deal worth up to £85million.

The duo are regarded as the best young strikers in the world and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk admits that they are two of his toughest opponents.

“It’s a different type of striker that we face now, doing very well, in Haaland,” Van Dijk said recently. “Also Darwin, he’s a bit similar. Very direct, quick, tall, strong. It’s quite difficult to play against those guys.”

The centre-back will be on the same side as Nunez next season but will come up against Haaland when Liverpool face City.
