Premier League legend backs Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland to have prolific seasons

Alan Shearer has tipped Liverpool and Manchester City’s new strikers, Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland, to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Nunez and Haaland were two of the most wanted players in world football after their exploits in recent seasons and both will be playing in the English top-flight next season following big money moves.

Uruguayan Nunez has moved to Anfield from Benfica in a deal that could rise to a club-record £85million, having also been linked to Manchester United in recent months, while Haaland has gone from Borussia Dortmund to the Etihad after City triggered the £51m release clause in the Norwegian’s contract.

Both players are expected to score many, many goals and Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time record goal scorer, has high hopes for the two forwards.

‘Two huge signings. Two fantastic players,’ the former Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle striker told Sky Sports.

‘I’m certain both players will score a lot of goals in the Premier League and will make their clubs better. I’ve seen bits of them in the Champions League, obviously.

‘It’s great for the Premier League that their clubs are able to attract those kind of players and I look forward to watching them a lot next season.

‘They’ve both [Liverpool and City] had success last season and when you win things you’ve got to go out and strengthen.

‘With the turnover of [Sadio] Mane, Liverpool had to bring someone big in to try and replace him, because he’s been an unbelievable player for them.’

Given their ages, prolific form and the quality of the sides they’re going to be playing for, some believe that both players could go onto do the unthinkable and break Shearer’s long-standing record of 260 Premier League goals.
