'Horrible' - Mark Bonner makes brutal Cambridge United admission after Sheffield Wednesday loss

Cambridge United boss Mark Bonner described their 6-0 drubbing to Sheffield Wednesday as a "sobering, horrible afternoon".

Burundi international Saido Berahino scored a hat-trick as the Owls secured their biggest win of the season.

It was a dominant display from Wednesday, who registered 23 shots compared to the U's six.

Defeat extended Cambridge's winless run to four outings.

Bonner heaped praise on the Owls, saying: “They’ve shown our players, us and me what really good looks like.

“We’re not expected to be competing with them in terms of positions in the league table, but you want to be more competitive than that on a matchday against them, like we were earlier in the season. They just found their flow and their way straight away.

“There could be hundreds of reasons as to why (they struggled defensively). Perhaps the shape of the team’s wrong. Perhaps we need a back five or a midfield five against them to try and take away some of that space. Perhaps we need to make more changes at this stage of the season.

“We just couldn’t get control of it. We couldn’t deal with the runners in behind or the combination play, and they peppered us as a consequence of that. Any time we had the chance to bring some control or get the ball back we didn’t.

“[There were] loads of things wrong with it, and loads of things where we just couldn’t find the level against them.

“Some big reflections for us in that sense, and a bit of a sobering, horrible afternoon for us, but credit to them, because the level that they found was exceptional I thought.”

It was the heaviest defeat Bonner has suffered since taking over as Cambridge boss in January 2020. He was quick to acknowledge there was a big gulf in class between the two sides.
