Hopeful Eagles depart for Monrovia

Jose Peseiro

Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro is optimistic of picking the three points at stake, as the team departs for Monrovia, Liberia, this morning for the 2023 AFCON qualifier against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.

Though, Peseiro said he is wary of Sierra Leone threat, but expressed optimism that the star-studded Eagles won’t disappoint in the match, which holds tomorrow.

The Super Eagles, with nine points, is currently behind Guinea Bissau, who have 10 points on the table, but Nigeria will regain its leadership position if the Leone Stars fall tomorrow.

On the other hand, the Leone Stars sit third on the table, and a loss would have dire consequences on their qualification for the 2023 showpiece to be hosted in Cote d’Ivoire. Peseiro stated that his team would be at their best in tomorrow’s battle against Sierra Leone at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia.

“I am expecting a tough game, Peseira told soccernet.ng. When both teams met in the reverse fixture at Abuja last year, the Super Eagles had to come from a goal down to win 2-1. The Leone Stars proved to be a difficult nut to crack, despite the gulf in quality between both sides.

“It will be a difficult game because in the last three games, we have drawn two and won one, which was in Abuja last year. Also, Sierra Leone has just one opportunity. They have to beat us. If they don’t, they are out.

“No one can say the result clearly, but we can only talk after 90 minutes will we know the result.

“Sierra Leone opened camp before us. It’s a good team. So we need to put in our best, and our best concentration and play a collective game,” he stated.
