History made as Limerick beat Clare in penalty shootout

(After extra-time, Limerick win 4-1 on penalties)

History was made in Ennis as Limerick prevailed in the dying light, beating their hosts in the senior football championship's first ever penalty shootout.

The teams could not be separated after 70 minutes of extra-time, nor 20 minutes of extra-time, so as the light faded in Cusack Park, the two teams settled things in novel circumstances.

It was Limerick who held their nerve, scoring flawlessly with their first four kicks, while Clare missed two of their three, to see the Treaty men advance to a Munster SFC semi-final against Tipperary.

Ian Corbett, Robbie Bourke, Brian Donovan and the match-winner James Naughton were all on target from the spot for Limerick, while Cian O'Dea and Conor Jordan missed for the hosts before Joe McGann found the net, but it was too little too late.

The 2,980 in attendance were certainly given value for money as 90 minutes of playing action still failed to separate the sides.

Clare will look back ruefully on their end to normal time when momentum was clearly behind them. However, a superb match-winning save from Limerick captain Donal O'Sullivan proved pivotal as Limerick eventually secured their first championship victory over Clare since 2009.

Despite facing into the conditions, it was the hosts that began the brighter but after early points from Aaron Griffin and David Tubridy were both cancelled out by Josh Ryan and Hugh Bourke, the Banner would kick three of the next four to cement a 0-5 to 0-3 opening quarter advantage.

Limerick would finally settle into their stride, eventually turning the tide in spectacular fashion when full-back Brian Fanning slalomed along the right wing from his own half to cut inside and find the net in the 28th minute.
