Historic park next to Rochdale Town Hall takes step towards huge transformation

A regeneration of the Grade-II listed Broadfield Park Slopes in Rochdale has taken a huge step forward.

Contractor, the Casey Group, has now been appointed to deliver the project, which will restore the historic slopes behind Rochdale Town Hall. The restoration project will see the Packer Spout fountain and water supply restored, alongside a natural pond.

Obelisks close to the fountain and the network of footpaths will also be repaired.

Better lighting and an expanded CCTV network are also included to deter crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. Rochdale Council’s public consultation found that people think the area is unsafe - and regeneration plans are aiming to change that.

The £3m project, which is being funded by the council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, also includes a full activity programme, so residents of all ages can get stuck in.

An archaeological dig recently unearthed the remains of a wall and drain, thought to date from the 17th or 18th century. But further projects are also ongoing with local schoolchildren and the Young Archaeologist’s Club.

Coun Danny Meredith, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Nestled between our recently restored Grade I Listed town hall and the Medieval St Chad’s Church, this area is steeped in history. This fantastic, National Lottery supported project, will help us uncover even more of our borough’s rich heritage and allow our residents to share in the proud stories of Rochdale’s past.
