High-flying musical 42 Balloons set to amaze audiences in Greater Manchester this spring

Floating into the spotlight at The Lowry in Salford this spring, the musical 42 Balloons promises an uplifting journey that defies gravity and captures the imagination.

Inspired by the improbable true story of truck driver Larry Walters, who soared 16,000 feet above Los Angeles in a lawn chair tethered to 42 helium-filled weather balloons on July 2, 1982, this production is set to captivate audiences with its unique narrative.

At a recent exclusive performance among an invited audience of media guests, 42 Balloons unveiled a selection of its electrifying songs, sending ripples of excitement through the room.

The song showcased the musical's irresistible 80s pop-inspired score, teasing the audience with a glimpse of the auditory thrill that awaits. The ensuing applause that followed attested to the energy and captivating harmonies that permeated the space.

Attendees were not only treated to a musical preview but also had the opportunity to engage with the actors and directors as they delved into discussions about the show and its creative process.

Jack Godfrey, the mastermind behind the musical, whose other works include This is a Love Story (Dundee Rep) and Babies (Lyric), shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming full production heading to The Lowry on 18 April.

Reflecting on his six-year journey since the inception of the show, he said: "I am so excited for the full production of 42 Balloons coming to The Lowry in April. It's been about six years since I started writing the show after discovering the incredible story of Larry's flight during a late-night online deep dive.
