Hibs 1, Motherwell 3: Well are no April fools as van Veen double dumps Hibs at Easter Road

Motherwell moved further away from the Premiership drop-zone with a commanding win over Hibs at Easter Road.

The Lanarkshire side showed they're no fools on April 1, as set-piece goals from Sean Goss and Kevin van Veen saw them pretty much home and dry by 52 minutes.

Sean Goss got Motherwell off the mark in eight minutes with a cracker into the top right corner, van Veen struck a 52nd-minute penalty and then rattled in a ferocious free kick with nine minutes left for his 20th goal of the season.

Though Kevin Nisbet pulled a goal back in 62 minutes, it was consolation for the mis-firing Edinburgh giants.

This result moves Motherwell up to eighth in the table, 11 points off bottom-placed Dundee United and nine ahead of Ross County, who host Celtic tomorrow.

Motherwell attacked early on in the game, with Marshall making a smart block from van Veen, before they took the lead.

Hibs had a few good chances after that, with Kevin Nisbet seeing a header well saved, before Chris Cadden curled a shot round a post.

But Motherwell finished the half fairly strongly, with van Veen slipping a low shot past the post when he should probably have scored.

Motherwell scored their penalty early on in the second half, and after Nisbet's goal, Hibs threw everything they had at the visitors in a bid to find an equaliser.

But the game was put beyond doubt when van Veen arrowed a free kick into the bottom corner with nine minutes left.

Hibs boss Lee Johnson made three changes from the side that lost 3-1 at Celtic Park last time out. Matthew Hoppe, Chris Cadden and Kevin Nisbet came in for Marijan Cabraja, Lewis Miller and suspended Elie Youan.
