The officers involved are set to be formally commended for their life-saving actions. A man, meanwhile, has been arrested and is being questioned.

Police were called to McDonald's on St Ann's Square in Manchester city centre at 4.10pm on Saturday following reports of a fight.

In a statement, the force said: "GMP neighbourhood officers provided life-saving treatment after a man was injured in a city centre restaurant.

"Officers from the Longsight and Rusholme Neighbourhood Policing Team, who were on patrol in the city centre, attended and performed emergency CPR on a man before paramedics arrived to take him to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition."

Chief Inspector Stephen Wiggins, of GMP's City of Manchester Central division, said: "The officers acted quickly and decisively - all our officers are trained to carry out CPR and in this case may have saved a man's life.

"He is recovering in hospital and hopefully he will make a full recovery.

"We are proud of all our officers and in this case we are putting them forward for a commendation."

A man was arrested on suspicion of assault and remained in custody for questioning on Sunday morning.

No further details have been revealed about the victim or the man under arrest.
