Hendrikse, Potgieter score doubles as Sharks dominate Bordeaux in Champions Cup

Jaden Hendrikse was a man on a mission, scoring two tries to help the Sharks ease to a 32-3 win over French club Union Bordeaux-Begles at Kings Park on Saturday.

The victory seals the Sharks' qualification from the Champions Cup's Pool A into the round of 16.

Hendrikse was the dominant force of the first half when the Sharks hardly put a foot wrong.

He helped himself to two tries, one in the 12th and the other in the 23rd minute, running the show with quick ball and making sure the Sharks played deep inside the Bordeaux territory.

The Sharks had lost flyhalf Curwin Bosch before kick-off, meaning Lionel Cronje slotted in at No 10 but the Springbok scrumhalf was the de facto general on the park. Later, the Durbanites lost hooker Bongi Mbonambi to a shoulder injury.

Hendrikse almost had a hat-trick on the half-hour but was stopped centimetres shy. However, he managed to recycle enough to let lock Gerbrandt Grobler pick up and score.

Bordeaux suffered four yellow cards at three different junctures in the game, which made the task of trying to upset the Sharks at home more difficult for the Frenchmen.

The Sharks also displayed an impressive defence, keeping the visitors so far at arms-length that Bordeaux won't remember what the Sharks' 22m area looked like when they get home.

Even former Shark Madosh Tambwe, who tried to gee up his teammates, struggled to make a mark against his former team, getting little by way of try-scoring opportunities.

Somehow, it took the Sharks another 30 minutes to score their fourth, bonus-point try when Marnus Potgieter benefitted from Siya Kolisi's brilliant hands, both in catching a low pass and in offloading to the wing to score.
