Heartwarming moment Belle Brockhoff is consoled by Aussie Olympic legend Lydia Lassila after crushing miss

Belle Brockhoff finished fourth in the Olympic snowboard cross - and it’s nothing to be sneezed at.

She went from 18th to a big final in the the 29-year-old’s best result at a Winter Olympics.

But a teary Brockhoff admitted she was hurting after a difficult medal race.

“I thought I’d be OK, and I thought I wasn’t going to cry, but I’m definitely crying,” a tearful Brockhoff told Channel 7 after the medal race.

The triple Olympian, who has been outspoken in her battles with her mental health, said she “had a bit of a breakdown” in front of her family ahead of the race after a crash in training on Tuesday.

“I had a really bad training day yesterday, I couldn’t get a lap down,” she added.

“I had a crash, hit my head, knocked the air out of my lungs. My knees have had a lot of issues.

“All I can say is ‘oh well’ rather than ‘what if’.”

The moments following her interview marked a heartwarming moment symbolic of the supportive community and camaraderie within the Australian Winter Olympics team.

The clearly distraught Brockhoff was consoled and comforted by Australian Olympic freestyle skier gold medallist Lydia Lassila.

Lassila, who provides mentoring and support for a lot of Australia’s athletes, said her words of of advice were, in effect, to get everything out of her mind and have some fun.

“I told her to reset,” she said following the magic moment.

“She’s got another chance, which is amazing. She didn’t have that last Olympics.

“She’s got a bit of a sore knee but she’s tough as nails, she’ll manage it.”
