Hearts host VAR trial match as Hamilton youth game sees Kevin Clancy make tech assisted penalty call

VAR was trialled by a Scottish refereeing team during an Under-14s match on Sunday between Hearts and Hamilton at the Jambos' Oriam base.

The match kicked off a series of VAR trials across the country.

And there was a big call made during the 90 minutes by top flight whistler Kevin Clancy.

Clancy and his SFA colleagues have been training in recent months for the roll out of VAR.

It is expected that VAR could be a mainstay in the Scottish Premiership from midway through next season after the World Cup in Qatar, though clubs remain in talks regarding the price of the technology.

In the match, Hearts took the lead after six minutes before being pegged back, but regained their advantage before the break.

Hamilton drew level six minutes after the restart before VAR was finally called into action with 15 minutes remaining.

The visitors were awarded a penalty after a VAR check was used to get another look at the decision.

It was saved before the rebound was turned home – only for Clancy to rule it out for an infringement.

Hearts then scored the winner with four minutes left.
