Hearts and Hibs Euro prize money revealed as Conference League efforts bank seven figures despite group stage miss
Hearts and Hibs may be out of European football but the money is rolling in.
Both Edinburgh sides failed to reach the group stage of the Conference League, despite spirited performances in the qualifying round prior to the play-off. Hearts gave their fans some last minute drama against Rosenborg side at Tynecastle, while Hibs Swiss mission was completed with a cool win against Luzern. Yet the reality came crashing down when PAOK and Premier League Aston Villa flexed their Euro muscles to knock the capital side's out.
But UEFA have dolled out what the Edinburgh sides are due €750,000 [£644,000] for reaching the play-off stage, with each club to receive €100,000 [£86,000] per round and a fixed amount upon elimination. That means the Jambos banked around £172,000 from their two round on top of the £644,000. The Hibees played an extra round so will be looking at a nice £258,000 payout plus the £644,000.
That means both sides including ticket revenue and TV money can expect to bank around £2million each, with currently managerless Hibs earning a decent amount more due to the extra round. The lure of £3million just for making the group stage was missed, with that tantalising amount not even including the money made from briefs and from the TV.
However both the Gorgie and Leith outfits will be hoping next year they can make the next round, with Aberdeen involved in the group stage after dropping down from Europa League qualifying. They will face Eintracht Frankfurt, PAOK and HJK Helsinki.
