Manchester United star makes surprise appearance at Davis Cup to cheer on Sir Andy Murray

Sir Andy Murrary broke down in tears after being victorious on court at the Davis Cup, as a Manchester United star made a surprise appearance.

Manchester's AO Arena has been hosting the group stages of the Davis Cup this week. Great Britain, France, Switzerland and Australia are competing with a spot in the finals up for grabs. On Friday, Murray played for the first time as Great Britain took on Switzerland.

The Wimbledon champion overcame Leandro Riedi, 21, in front of a crowd of thousands at the arena. In trademark Murray style, the win was something of a rollercoaster with the 36-year-old losing the first set only to hit back and take the following two.

At the end of the encounter, Murray told supporters of a few humorous, uniquely Manchester, experiences he’s enjoyed this week before the on-court interviewer drew his attention to a 90-year-old fan in the crowd who was attending her first tennis event.

Murray promised her a gift before he broke down in tears. He said: Today is a tough day for me. It is actually my gran’s funeral today. I'm sorry to my family that I'm not able to be there. Gran, that one's for you.”

Among the crowd was Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton who was spotted courtside posing selfies. This weekend’s closing day of action, which will see Great Britain take on France, has already sold out. Many will be hoping to see Murray competing in Manchester once again.

Once everything is wrapped up on court, the two top ranked teams from the Manchester play will go through to the finals of the Davis Cup which is taking place in Malaga this November.
