Heartbroken family's tribute to 'larger than life' man with 'heart of gold' tragically killed after becoming trapped in house fire

The heartbroken family of a 'larger than life' man with a 'heart of gold' who died after becoming trapped in a house fire have paid tribute to him.

Mark Vernal was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries following the fire at the property on Dumbarton Green in Wigan on on August 14. He later died in hospital.

Police said he became 'trapped' inside the burning property. Crime Scene Investigation teams remained at the house throughout the week after the suspected arson attack conducting investigations.

After Mr Vernal's death, police launched a murder probe and arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of murder and section 18 assault. He was taken into custody to be questioned. Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for an update.

His brother Michael has since set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his funeral, where he was described as 'larger than life' and with a 'heart of gold'. Over £3,000 has been raised so far in his memory.

Michael penned: "I am fundraising for the funeral of my brother Mark Vernal who was tragically taken from us on the 15th August. I want to give him the send off he deserves as we all know he was a larger than life character with a heart of gold, he will be truly missed by all his family and friends.

"Thank you for your donations and caring words at this difficult time. We all as a family can’t believe the generosity and all the love we have been shown over these past couple of days, our Mark will be forever missed by us all."

After the fatal incident, floral tributes were left at the scene on Dumbarton Green as local neighbours spoke to the Manchester Evening News.
