Health minister and NHS Wales boss face questions about pressures facing the health service - live

The immense pressures on the Welsh NHS are being laid bare this afternoon in front of Senedd Members.

Health Minister Eluned Morgan, along with the new chief executive of the Welsh NHS Judith Paget, are giving evidence to the Welsh Parliament's Health and Social Care Committee.

As Covid rates start to fall across the country, the emphasis now turns to reducing the record-breaking backlog of non-urgent surgeries, appointments and procedures which were halted during large parts of the pandemic.

Around one in five of the Welsh population (682,279 people) were on the Welsh NHS waiting list in November 2021 - the most in history. Nearly a third (241,667) of them have been waiting for nine months or more.

The performance of accident and emergency departments and the Welsh Ambulance Service has also deteriorated in recent months. You can see latest figures here.

The evidence session is expected to look at the NHS backblog, current staffing and bed levels, as well as how Wales plans to emerge from the pandemic.
