Health expert explains why having this kind of drink is the 'perfect' alternative to evening glass of wine

A 'gut health and weight loss expert' has explained why drinking a hot drink in the evening can be the 'perfect' alternative to a post-work glass of wine. Instead of uncorking the bottle after a stressful day, American health educator Saurabh Sethi took to his Instagram to share that chamomile tea could be an alternative.

Chamomile tea can offer 'some seriously relaxing effects', he told his more than half a million followers. "If you're used to sipping wine in the evening to de-stress, it might be time to give this soothing herbal tea a try!" he added.

"Chamomile contains anti-oxidants that help promote sleepiness," continued the post. "Drinking chamomile tea has been shown to improve overall sleep quality.

"People who drink wine in the evening to unwind don't know about chamomile tea's excellent relaxing effects. Try it fam!" he said.

Chamomile is rich in compounds called flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties and appear to be beneficial for both cholesterol management and blood pressure. Chamomile may help improve blood sugar regulation in those with diabetes, it’s thought it may do this by supressing blood sugar levels and helping to improve liver glycogen storage, reports the BBC.

One study of 64 adults with type 2 diabetes, who drank three cups of chamomile tea a day for eight weeks, showed a significant decrease in their HbA1C markers (a marker used as an indicator for diabetes), as well as improved glycaemic control and blood lipid profile.
