'He now plays 90 minutes!': Sekgota's early season form for Chiefs earns worthy Bafana call

Kgaogelo Sekgota has been a breath of fresh air this season for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has not turned a blind eye.

For the first time under Broos' tenure, the 25-year-old was named in the 23-man Bafana squad for matches against Sierra Leone and Botswana. 

It has not been an easy journey for Sekgota since joining the club back in 2021, having to earn his stripes from the bench.

Described as one of the best players by his Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane, he has often been criticised for only being an impact player.

However, he has started the 2022/23 campaign with a point to prove, putting in quality, high work rate and focussed performances for Amakhosi.

"Sekgota is obviously, ever since the beginning of the season, one of the best players to have and what I'm glad about is that he is now playing 90 minutes," Zwane told reporters after Chiefs ended their winless streak against SuperSport United on Saturday with a 2-1 victory.

"When you look at him in previous seasons, he was more like an impact player.

"Now we can play 90 minutes and still show character and take the game to the opposition because he is more direct.

"You need those kinds of players to put the opposition under pressure."

Zwane highlighted that he is disappointed that only one Chiefs player has been called up to the national team.

However, he maintains his support for Sekgota, as he would with any Chiefs player being called up to Bafana.  

"I'm happy for Sekgota," said Zwane.

"We needed at least one, two or three players to be in the national team, but it wasn't to be intended the number of players called up to the national team.
