Harry Redknapp sends Phil Foden message after Man United hat-trick in Manchester derby

Harry Redknapp says Phil Foden proved doubters wrong with his treble against Manchester United on Sunday when selecting him and fellow hat-trick hero Erling Haaland in his team of the week.

The duo hogged all the home goals in the 6-3 mauling as Manchester City re-closed the gap on league leaders Arsenal to one point. Haaland now has 17 goals in 10 games this season and is well on course for the Golden Boot.

Hailing the superstar striker to Bet Victor, Redknapp said: “I mean, what can you say? He's a machine. Now that Kevin De Bruyne and Foden know where he's going to run, they just play it into the space.

"It must be a bit like defending against the invisible man! He could break every record going this season.”

Meanwhile, Foden has got six goals himself this term and at the current rate is on track to exceed last season’s tally of 14 strikes. His finishing is an aspect of his game that some have criticised despite hitting double figures in both of the last two campaigns.

The 22-year-old is being backed to start for England at next month’s World Cup and Redknapp believes his clinical display against United is an encouraging sign for Gareth Southgate. He added: “He [Foden] won't have many better afternoons than that.

“Superb again, Man United really couldn't cope with him at all. One criticism of Phil has maybe been that he doesn't score enough, but this should give him huge confidence to keep them coming. Great news for England before the World Cup.”

Foden has scored twice in 18 appearances for the Three Lions, both of them coming in a 4-0 Nations League win over Iceland in November 2020.
